and what they did or what happened

PEOPLE:



Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette- explored the Mississippi River and claimed the Illinois Country for France.





Louis duc de Chartres- he was the son of the regent of France and the fort was named after him since France owned the land.



EVENTS:



Fort de Chartres built- wooden fort in honor of Louis duc de Chartres was soon built eighteen miles north of the village of Kaskaskia.



Great Mississippi Flood- quickly deteriorated the fort because of this flood and many other small floods.

The signing of the Treaty of Paris- ended the Seven Years War.
